Tamborine Mountain Universe Inc

In April 2017 local artist Vanessa Stanley and her (now) late husband, rocket scientist Dr. Ross Paull, donated the former Tamborine Mountain (TM) Telescope back to the community, after salvaging it from a storage shed years earlier.

A community group was formed later that year to consider the options, it took more than two years for the stars to align.

Early 2020 the Management Committee of TM Universe Inc considered the best option was to establish the project as a Social Enterprise.

At the same time a very talented 3D Designer and Technical Director, Sam Ghafari suggested to create a spherical planetarium as the center piece of the future precinct, the first of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere.

Research from overseas, in the Australian market, with universities and with government experts showed that this project could be very feasible.

The community group became a Social Enterprise and in November 2020 a very professional Board was elected. The Social Enterprise will essentially be operated by the community.

The establishment of TMU in 2020 helped to obtained the land and to allow for South East Queensland to have its own Science Centre to give the public a unique experience with respect to astronomy and space research, accessible for all generations. Tamborine Mountain Universe Inc supports the project and is Friends of TM Universe.

The Project will include:

  • Universe Experience Centre with high tech interactive displays explaining the Universe
  • Cosmic Sphere, a full 360 planetarium - the first in the Southern Hemisphere
  • Replica of the former TM Observatory
  • Stargazing events to be organised together with regional astronomers’ associations
